Scooting!!

What are Anal Glands? (Ewww!) What do I do about them?

All dogs and cats are born with Anal Glands that empty into sac-like structures located at the four & eight o'clock position around the anus. These glands secrete a strong smelling liquid that has a scent that is unique to each dog/cat, like a fingerprint (ever wondered about all the butt-sniffing your dog does??). Normally, the anal glands empty when the dog defecates or is startled. If the sacs are blocked your pet won't be able to release the fluid in the glands. This problem is most common in smaller breeds.

Symptoms:

  • licking his anal area (more than usual)
  • dragging his rump on the ground (scooting)
  • displaying discomfort when defecating
  • having a swollen/inflamed anal area
  • extreme cases..the sac ruptures
Treatment:
  • if you suspect blocked anal glands, please take him to the vet
  • the vet may manually drain the Anal glands
  • the vet may teach you how to do this
  • if infection is suspected, your vet may flush with an anti-bacterial ointment and provide pain control
  • chronic anal sac infections may need anal sac removal
Follow-Up:
  • it's important not to drain the anal glands too often, this can increase the frequency of infection & discomfort
  • it is not necessary to have your groomer express the anal glands unless signs of inflammation are present
Other causes of Scooting:
  • allergies
  • hair or dirt around anus
  • itching
How to express the Anal glands yourself:
Normally you will probably be unable to feel the anal sacs unless they are full or impacted and in need of expressing. Then they will be the size of a grape or larger, depending upon the size of your dog.

First, you'll need a pair of latex gloves commonly used for hygiene purposes. You'll need a pan or pail of warm soapy water and a disposable wash cloth or sturdy paper towels. If your dog is cooperative, you may not need a helper. If he will stand, wash his anal area with the soapy water, hold his tail to one side with one hand, locate the anal glands by placing a finger at 5 & 7 o'clock on either side of the anus. Gently but firmly, press your fingers in & up, trapping & squeezing the sacs. Catch the expressed fluid in the paper towel. Then gently wash your dogs anal area with warm soap & water. Any questions or concerns? Head to the vet ASAP!
