Your Vet is the most important person in your pets health. Knowing how to find a vet you trust is important as well. Here are a few tips to get you started. Your search should start before you bring home your new pet. Studies show that pet owners visit their vet much more often than they visit their own doctor!! (I only see my doctor if I am on my death bed...but my dogs are there at the slightest sign of trouble
) - Ask your friends and family to recommend a good vet
- Think about the location of the vet clinic, hours of operation and if they handle emergencies
- Think about the location of an emergency animal hospital
- Visit the clinic to see that it is clean, ask to take a tour & see if the staff is friendly & helpful
- Ask how long the vet has been practicing, if they keep up-to-date, and if they hold any special training. Are they familiar with the specific breed of dog you are planning to adopt
- Is the clinic able to do their own lab tests, x-rays and other diagnostic exams, if not, where is this done
- Do you feel comfortable with the vet, are they willing to answer questions
- Ask for a price list for services. Know what you are looking to pay before you get the bill
Vet costs can really get big, really fast. Know what the services are going to cost. Look into pet health insurance while your pet is young. Open a saving account just for your pet, always be prepared. If you were to put away even $50/month, you are taking the burden off of costs.
Remember to always trust your instincts!! Develop a positive relationship with your vet and the staff, it is the very best for your pets health!!
