Merle Chihuahuas
I would like to provide some information on Merle Chihuahuas. I currently have one female who carries this gene (Ella). The Merle Chihuahua is a Hot Topic among breeders around the world. A quick internet search will show you this. I had been very against this pattern, especially after all of the scary things from Anti-merle breeders, which I have found to be mostly cut & paste without any real science to back it up. I believe in searching for proof of any claims, so thats what I did. After doing my own research (lots and lots of it) & finding that this pattern can be bred with special care, I have fallen in love with them. I have found that my Merle pups/dogs are the same as my Non-merles, in every way except pattern.
As with this pattern in any breed of dog, it has special considerations to breed safely & responsibly. Any dog used in my breeding program is screened for health before breeding, regardless of color or pattern.
Merle is a Pattern, not a color, which dilutes the base color of the dog. It is not recessive in the Chihuahua, so if the dog has the gene, it will BE a Merle. Hidden Merles may be present when the Merling has faded as the dog grows, as with fawn Merles. Breeding a Merle with a Merle can be very dangerous, causing health problems such as blindness & deafness.

Feel free to join this forum, "Chihuahuas of a Different Color", there is a wealth of excellent information about this beautiful pattern:
