Riding with your pet
Maybe your dog suffers from fear, anxiety, motion sickness & other problems with travelling? Lets try some tips to make it easier on you both!!
Prepare:
- start when your dog is young (if possible), the first 3 months are critical for teaching. But its never too late to learn new things
- make rides enjoyable & happy
- use proper restraints (crate, harness, seatbelt..etc.) this is the law in some areas
- have a helper with you to deal with your pet (we don't want any accidents)
- i suggest (strongly) a travel crate, my dogs learn early that their crate is their safe place when driving. It also keeps me focused on the road.
Tips:
- keep the first few trips short
- keep calm
- use treats and toys to keep your dog distracted
- end your trips on a happy note, praise good behavior
- your dog will follow your energy, if you get upset, he will be too
- practice, practice, practice!
Motion Sickness:
- have your pet examined to check if it is caused by an inner ear problem
- determine if it is caused by anxiety
- consider fasting (no food) for several hours before travelling
- consider anti-anxiety, anti-nausea medication (all natural if possible, i use "Rescue Remedy" from my vet)
