Surrendered & Rescued Dogs

As always, I have taken in abandoned or surrendered chihuahuas, made sure they receive proper vet care, shots & had them spayed & neutered (if they aren't already). I then take special care to find them a suitable home, where they will be cared for and loved the rest of their life.
This is where I see some of the most heartbreaking situations. Not all situations are negative, but many are.

The most common situation I see....A person walks through the pet store, looking for a gold fish, and suddenly they see an adorable litter of puppies in a little pen, jumping, yelping and ohhhh soooo cute!!. Before the hour is up, they are walking out of the pet store with a new puppy, dog food, toys and dreams of the perfect dog..... and no idea what it means or how to get there. The training, the messes, the chewing, the barking, the messes, the vet bills, the messes....you get the picture...

I can almost guarantee that the puppy will become a burden to their new owners and "fluffy" is out the door. All their bad habits, lack of proper training and a bag of all their stuff is now for sale to the first home they find. Oh, and we won't forget, almost all of these puppies are from puppy mills and the perfect candidate for health problems.
Excuses I have seen and been told so far....

  • " We have had our dog for 3 yrs and suddenly our child has severe allergies"
  • " We are moving and can't take our dog"
  • " Our other pets don't like the new puppy"
  • " My child wanted a puppy for his birthday, but won't look after it now"
  • " My puppy keeps having accidents"
  • " My lifestyle doesn't fit with a dog anymore"
  • " I can't give the dog enough attention"
  • " My dog isn't socialized enough and barks all the time"
  • " My husband doesn't want a dog around anymore"
  • " We are having a new baby and can't keep our dog"
  • " I want to travel now so have to give up the dog"
  • " The neighbors are complaining of too much barking, my dog needs a new home"
My heart breaks a little more each time for these dogs. It wasn't their choice to be born, bought and then given up. It isn't their fault that they have bad habits, or don't amuse their families anymore. Now its time to find them the proper home where they can be truly loved as part of a family.

I want to also say that I am finding more and more families who do their research and take the time to find the right dog for their family.
THANK YOU FOR CARING AND BEING RESPONSIBLE & FOR STAYING AWAY FROM PET STORES

Below you will occasionally find a chihuahua or a chihuahua mix, looking for a family. These families need be experienced, patient, loving & committed. Adoption of these dogs may require a commitment to some professional training & an understanding heart, but I can assure you, they will be a committed companion to you, as long as they live.
Feel free to contact me anytime for information, or to surrender a dog in need of care or a new home. A special thank you to Val Haber, who is an amazing animal advocate & a great friend. You are truly a wonderful person.

Introducing.......

"Cruz"
*Aug 15, 2008*
Formerly known as "Psyco" by his previous owners. He was surrendered on Aug 14th to my close friend Val in Calgary. His owners claimed he was aggressive and they were moving, so they had to give him away or he would be put to sleep. I drove to Calgary and picked him up at Val's, stayed in a hotel overnight with Cruz & Jazz, then drove home. I stopped at my vet in Sylvan and he got his health check-up.
