Please Spay or Neuter your new pet

Neutering your male

Neutering your male eliminates the possibility of testicular tumors and greatly reduces the chance of prostate cancer. Neutering decreases the incidence of perianal tumors and hernias, which are commonly observed in older, unaltered males. Neutered males are less likely to try to escape a yard to find a female in season. This reduces the chance of them being lost, hit by cars, getting into fights with other dogs, or stollen. Neutering before sexual maturity also offers the benifit of having a male who is less aggressive, less distracted and less likely to mark his scent.

Spaying your female

Females spayed before their first cycle greatly reduces her chance of mammary tumors, ovarian cancer and uterine infection, all of which can be fatal and extremely costly to treat. A spayed female eliminates the neighborhood stray males from camping out on your lawn when she comes into heat. Giving birth to a litter can be very dangerous and if problems were to arrise, expensive too. Spaying your female also eliminates that bloody spotting, which can be quite a lot in some females, when she has her cycle. It is a myth that you should wait until after your female has a heat to have her spayed. Spaying your female also makes her a better companion to you.

Unwanted litters

A male and a female and their offspring can produce thousands of puppies over just a few years, may of which are in the hands of irresponsible breeders and puppy millers. Just because a puppy is cute, doesn't mean it will find a home, and if it does, maybe not a permanent and healthy one. Every year, tens of thousands of dogs and puppies, purebred and crossbred are euthanized in shelters. More die on the street or live in neglect, abuse and horrors.

Cost of Neutering/Spaying

The cost to spay or neuter your dog is far less than you would spend getting a litter of puppies all their shots. It is less than vet bills for health problems associated with breeding and related issues. It is cheaper than having your carpets cleaned from male marking or female spotting. Talk to your vet about cost and any questions you have related to spaying or neutering your dog.
